In Loving Memory of Sambuca “Buca” Schroeder

June 6, 2006 – September 23, 2025

Sambuca — known as “Buca,” “The Queen,” and occasionally “Your Majesty” — left this world on September 23, 2025, after 19 glorious years of ruling her household with impeccable taste, high standards, and an iron paw wrapped in velvety fur.

Born on June 6, 2006, she moved herself (and her littermates) into the home of Kristin’s coworker before deciding that Kristin, then 28, would be her chosen human. From that moment on, Buca became a constant presence through love, loss, moves, milestones, and all the adventures of nearly two decades.

Buca supervised the decoration of Kristin’s first real Christmas tree, assisted with college coursework, tolerated endless relocations, and even helped remodel a first house before packing up once again for a new life in Minneapolis. Through every change, she was patient, loyal, and always quick to remind Kristin that heated beds were non-negotiable.

She was there for the darkest days — waiting quietly, offering her comfort, and making biscuits on Kristin’s throat whether it was convenient or not. She was by Kristin’s side in 2015 when the life-altering phone calls came about her brother, Andy and then her dad, Scott. Only Buca knew exactly what those days were like, and only she could help soften them with her quiet companionship.

In her lighter moments, The Queen enjoyed sunbathing, catching the occasional mouse, fancy dressing, and asserting her status as the true center of attention. She was also a one-time model for Chuck & Don’s and will forever be immortalized in Minnesota State Fair history through the award-winning seed art piece “Minneapawlis Invasion.” Even in art and advertising, Buca knew how to shine.

A lover of strings, warm laps, and doing exactly where she wished to do, The Queen never compromised. She fought bravely, and her departure leaves behind a silence and absence that can never be filled. For the first time in 19 years, Kristin must face a world where Buca isn’t everywhere – demanding the finest and refusing to be ignored.

Sambuca is survived by her devoted mom and chief servant, Kristin; her loyal dad (and secondary servant), Jim; and her many fur brothers: Tuxie, Ripley, Queso, Rebel, David Hasselhoof, Lord Farquaad, and Nero. She is preceded in death by her equine brother Taz, barely-tolerated feline sister Alley, and by her uncle Andy and grandfather Scott.

She will be remembered as the best cat a self-proclaimed crazy cat lady could ever ask for.

Buca, tell Andy, Dad, Taz and Alley I say “hello”, and let them know they’re still loved. Until we meet again: I’ll find you when I get there.
